The LUCAS Method. -L- Learn, the First Step.

I have created the LUCAS method. It consists of five easy steps that will transform a traditional lengthy 30 page marketing plan (excluding appendices) into an easy non-intimidating yet, scalable social selling guide. The steps are Learn, Understand, Communicate, Authenticate and Socialize.

The first step is Learn. Audit the Current Marketing strategy. If you have a plan or have had one at some point during the life of your business, refer to it. Use a fine tooth comb and make a list for easy viewing and because colorful charts are so much fun! If you have never had a marketing plan or are a start-up, rip your marketing ideas out of your head and commit them to paper; preferably using a shiny chart similar to the one below. If the need fits, rephrase it for the future tense i.e. What will Produce the best results, What could be ineffective, how do we capitalize on the opportunities?

The far left column represents your current marketing efforts. List everything you are doing or plan to do to market your products.

The top row provides a simple way to audit those efforts.

Producing Results: Which parts of your marketing efforts are producing good results for your products? If your social media marketing consists of Facebook and Twitter, which is working, short blurb on how you can tell and next;

What is Ineffective: Write down which social media efforts are ineffective.

Opportunities for Improvement: There is always room for improvement. What opportunities do you have to improve your ineffective strategy? If all of your methods are effective, what more can you do to improve the Marketing Effort itself? Write it there.

This short chart answers the three questions that the Learn phase of the LUCAS Method is founded on:

1)      What are you currently doing

2)      What is working

3)      What opportunities are there for improvement

Typically, you can complete this step in 20 minutes or less. With The LUCAS Method, the initial assessment is meant to help you get going quickly. A “Social Selling Strategy” is a living document and should not be intimidating. Once the fear or trepidation dissipates, your creative juices will feel safe to start flowing. In all we do, inventory must be taken to figure out where we are and what resources we have before beginning…anything.

Who the Heck is Lucas?

Lucas is a method and a really cool name. The Lucas Firm focuses on 3 things and does those 3 things extremely well; Teach Social Selling, Being Social and Targeted Sociability B toB.

This number equates to about 1.6 Billion people worldwide that are not only online but, use Facebook.* If 1% of those people knew your product existed, would they buy it? How about aiming for two hundredths of a percent of that market; around 300,000 people? Could you sell your product to 300,000 people out of a pool of about 1,600,000,000 people?

Take these things into consideration:
  1. What is your current marketing strategy?
    • Strengths
    • Weaknesses
    • Opportunities for improvement
    • Potential Threats
Learn them. You need to know these things. If you don’t know them, make this your opportunity.

 2.   Understand.

  •        Your product. What emotions does it evoke
  •        What you want in exchange for your product
  •        Target market demographics. Who is your Ideal Customer? Develop your Sam.
 This will allow you to effectively Market your product to the people that you want to attract.
3. Communicate.
You’ve gathered valuable information. Now, what are you going to do with it? Take it and betroth it to your Strategy, which should be based heavily in Social Media Marketing to get hold of that 300,000 people just waiting for you to grab their attention. One more step before you get started…
4. Authenticate. 
Keep your message consistent. Whatever you choose to communicate needs to be a combination of what your consumer needs and transparency into who you and your brand are. Always do a check for authenticity before proceeding.
5.  Socialize.
Take what you Learned, the things you now better Understand, Communicate them into consistent goals, plan an executable strategy and Socialize, vigorously. 
This, my friend, is the basis for the Lucas Method.
